I'm living in Austria now doing my first real-world job: teaching English. Nothing qualifies me for this position other than the fact that I am an American and that should somehow mean I am an expert in this field (obviously the Austrian ministry of education does not have many dealings with Americans and our linguistic abominations or we would never be invited into their schools).
I've been in a relationship with the same guy for six years now, which amazes even me. It may not be the stuff of Hollywood chick flicks, but I once followed him 3,000 miles across the U.S.A. and he turned around and followed me across the Atlantic to a place where he didn't even speak the language, so at least we're committed. And we have a dog together, though I'm her favorite.
I'm a bit of a hippie-liberal-environmentalist, though living in a country where everyone bashes Bush on principle, thinks privatized health insurance is criminal and biodegradable waste is collected and composted by the city government makes me feel like I am part of the majority.
In the abundant free-time provided by my 12-hour a week job (which incidentally still provides me with full medical and dental) I read a ridiculous amount of literature, take the dog for walks, knit in front of badly-dubbed sitcoms which, while never popular in the U.S. somehow made it to Austrian TV, fight with my boyfriend for possession of our only laptop and drink a ridiculous amount of good Austrian beer and wine at amazingly cheap prices.
